I have been playing around with the hMailServer lately. hMailServer is a very good FREE mail server with a simple to use interface and power SPAM settings.

However, the default SPAM e-mail settings seem to be a bit relaxed.

Here is a summary of some optimal SPAM settings you can use for your own setup. They are fairly strict, but eliminate about 99% of e-mail SPAM:

hMailServer ANTI-SPAM Settings

Spam Mark threshold5
Spam Delete Threshold5
Use SPF3
Check host in the HELO command3
Check that the sender has a DNS-MX record3
TarpittingCount=3, Delay=30 seconds
Spamhaus - Enabled5
SpamCop - Enabled 5
SurBL - Enabled5
GreylistingDisabled

The reasoning behind these settings is that if any of the services (Spamhaus, SpamCop, SURBL) identify a message a SPAM, then it will be automatically deleted, otherwise if any 2 other checks fail the message will be deleted.

Well try these settings out, I am sure you can come up with your own preference, and help eliminate SPAM forever.

For what it's worth, I have not had a big spam problem until lately, I would normally get about thre or four spam messages a week until about a week ago when I started getting over fifty a day. I don't know what happened, but it's really pissing me off as it renders the email client on my iPhone useless.

I just turned on greylisting and will see how that works. I also use these settings...

Use SPF - on
Check host in the HELO command - on
Check that the sender has a DNS-MX record - on
Tarpitting - 3, 30

Deliver, but modify headers
- add X-HmailServer-Spam
- add X-hMailServer-Reason

I also use these blacklists...

- sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
- bl.spamcop.net
- combined.njabl.org
- cbl.abuseat.org
- dsbl.dnsbl.net.au
- list.dsbl.org

We'll see how that works.

I use hMailServer for several years and received a lot of spam the last months (+/-100 messages/day!)

Applied these settings, and they still work like a charm! Thanks a lot!

Another spam question: Since your blog doesn't use moderation (my previous comment was instantly visible), how do you get those nasty comment-bots out of the way?

My blog receives about 20 spam comments/day, grmbl.
